The weather is warming up and you feel more motivated to go for an early morning run. As the world wakes up, you look forward to this moment of peace for yourself before the workday goes haywire. We spoke with jaquie smith, certified integrative nutrition health coach and fitness instructor on the secret tricks you can do to jog your way to a lean body. “Running is effective for creating firm, toned bodies when done consistently and combined with a healthy diet. It’s a high-intensity form of movement that will burn a higher number of calories overall, leading to burning more fat,” she says Eat this, not that!

Smith highlights the key to achieving a sculpted, slim figure through any exercise is by focusing on good form. By doing this, you will target only the correct muscles and hopefully prevent injury. “Make sure you maintain an upright posture, relax your shoulders, engage your core, bring your knees forward, and pump your arms along your body as you jog,” says Smith.

If you want to get the most out of your exercise and achieve the best results, Smith says women should jog when they’re in the ovulating and follicular phases of their cycle. Why, you might ask? Since jogging is a full-body workout, “you’ll need a ton of available energy during this part of the cycle. Otherwise, you can cause your body to swell and store fat,” explains Smith.

Okay, we know you’re itching to hit the pavement again and experience that burst of energy, but don’t fall asleep in the recovery process. “Running is a lot on the body,” says Smith. “In order to be able to run consistently and get a toned physique, you’ll need time for your body to recover in between. [workouts]. This could be as simple as stretching, foam rolling, or taking a yoga class.”

Based on his experience, Smith says you’ll be much better at jogging and achieve lasting results when you focus on running a certain number of miles in the time it takes to run them. She adds: “Furthermore, as you continue [jog] on a regular basis, you’ll naturally be faster and more efficient every time you run this distance.”

As for additional tips for weight loss and slimming down, Smith notes that you should add low-impact strength exercises, like yoga and barre, to your regimen to further sculpt those lean muscles. Getting your body up and moving every day is also key, along with following a diet rich in vegetables and greens and staying hydrated.
