Expert urges parents not to wait if child needs mental health assistance

Mental health Professionals want parents to pay close attention to the red flags that the Highland Park Shooter.

They say that help is available if a child needs mental health assistance and that parents should not wait.

Dr. Colleen Cicchetti, executive director of the Lurie Children’s Hospital Center for Childhood Resilience, urges parents to trust their instincts.

She says that a change in mood, sleep, or eating cycles should be addressed with your pediatrician.

If parents notice direct threats or plots of violence from their child, they should talk to school counselors or call 911.

“We’re looking at 911 call centers, like in Chicago, we now have a social worker on site, 24 hours a day. If a parent is really worried about an emerging problem or an emergency, they should call them,” said the Dr Cicchetti.
