Chennai: Several years ago, VK will satyend he made a series of bird paintings and sent them to the (now deceased) artist S Nandagopal, who encouraged him to continue painting them.
“He told me that he had never seen anything like it and that he needed to put them on display,” says the 68-year-old. This Monday, Satyendran finally had the opportunity to exhibit his series of birds and animals at the Art and Mental Health exhibition organized by Schizophrenia Research Foundation (Scarf) in Amethyst. The exhibition, which will be open until Thursday, shows the creative abilities of people with mental health problems. “I feel like my moods are reflected in my paintings,” says Satyendran, an alumnus of Government College of Arts, Chennai.
“This is the second time we have organized an art show. We have 54 paintings on display,” he says. Dr. R. Mangala from Scarf. “But we have received such an overwhelming response with people with intellectual and mental health issues.” Proceeds from paintings sold go to the creator or to Scarf, depending on what the artist chooses.
“This exposure has not only brought out the talents of some of our patients, but has also helped them cope with mental health issues,” he says. Dr Mangalaadding that four paintings were sold on Monday.
Meanwhile, another exhibition with works by Preetha Mahadevana Boston-based artist living with bipolar disorder, will take place at the Apparao Galleries from July 20-28.
