The National Burn Center (NBC) in Airoli recently opened a nursery, a children’s play area and a gym. The medical center is dedicated to burn research, treating burn patients and enabling both adults and children to return to normality and lead happy and functional lives.
Nursery school for the children of Navi Mumbai hospital staff has been started. The children’s play area, highlighted in a report in this document, is for the children of staff and child burn survivors receiving treatment at the hospital. The gym is for hospital staff. While all three spaces opened, one was repeatedly reminded of the mental health aspect of healthcare.
A psychiatrist spoke about increased awareness of mental health during the times of Covid and how burn victims can suffer from psychological problems. The other doctors noted that a welcoming and warm environment for patients is a good thing, since burn patients often spend many days in the hospital for treatment, away from their families.
Doctors talked about how physical activity plays a role in increasing the feel-good factor, and that attitude can go from health care worker to patient.
All of these statements show the increasing space and importance we are giving to the mind even as we seek to heal bodies. We should now always declare forward in the mental space, working towards a trained and competent force of professionals dealing with mental health. The stigma should quickly fade and we need to see people ‘without fear’ of seeing counselors or specialists.
In fact, the healing of the mind must move along with the physical aspect. An open and even congratulatory attitude, when a person recognizes that he needs outside help, will take us down the path of understanding that peace of mind is important and, in fact, in conjunction with physical health.
More power to these and other similar initiatives.
