Antod Pharmaceuticals which had claimed that its approval to manufacture eye drops has been suspended by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). However, Antod Pharmaceuticals CEO Nikhil K. Masurkar said the company will challenge the decision in court.

Antod Pharmaceuticals had claimed that this eye drop would prove beneficial for presbyopia patients. It can eliminate their dependency on spectacles. According to the National Eye Institute, presbyopia can occur in people of any age. Near objects are not visible. While suspending the approval of the drug, the drug regulator said that the company had not obtained approval from the Central Licensing Authority for the drug product it claimed. Due to which the provisions of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019 have been violated.

कंपनी का दावा

The company had claimed that it is the first eye drop manufactured in India to reduce the need for reading glasses. The company also stated that there is no other eye drop for the treatment of presbyopia in India. In this regard, it is informed that Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP 1.25% w/v is not approved without any claim that it is designed to obviate the need for reading glasses.’

DGCI का दावा

The DGCI said in its order that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the public interest. Under the provisions of Rule 84 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019, the approval granted for manufacturing and marketing of Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP 1.25% w/v has been suspended till further orders.
