As the monsoon season progresses, dengue cases are increasing in Karnataka. Dengue or bone-breaking fever is one of the main causes of viral cases around the world. The infection is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. According to the Karnataka Chief Minister’s office, a total of 5,374 cases and five deaths have been reported in the state till yesterday, as reported by PTI. More cases have been reported from Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, Mysuru, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chitradurga and Dakshina Kannada districts. As many as 1,230 cases have been reported in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.

One of the risks of dengue is a drop in platelet count. This can lead to hospitalization and can be fatal if not treated in time. This is how you have to take all the necessary precautions and try to maintain your platelet count naturally at home.

Five ways to improve platelet count

  1. Stay Hydrated: Staying well hydrated is essential during dengue fever. Drink plenty of water, infusions and fluids rich in electrolytes to prevent dehydration.
  2. Focus on foods rich in platelets: Incorporate foods that are naturally rich in platelets or nutrients that increase platelets. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, which can support platelet health. Spinach and other leafy greens are high in vitamin K, important for platelet function. Citrus fruits also have vitamin C, which helps in the production of platelets.
  3. Herbs and spices to improve platelets: Herbs and spices have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help fight infection and also increase platelet count. Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, pepper and garlic are some of the best herbs and spices available in the kitchen that can help you recover from dengue fever.
  4. Manage stress: Stress can have a negative impact on the immune system and platelet production. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
  5. Get enough rest: Adequate rest and sleep are essential for the body to recover and maintain healthy platelet levels during dengue.
