Five years after the Covid-19 pandemic, China is currently grappling with an epidemic of a serious disease, human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Reports and social media posts show the virus is spreading rapidly. Some say hospitals and cremation grounds are overcrowded. Crowds are seen at hospitals in videos shared online. Some users claim that many viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, mycoplasma pneumonia and Covid-19, are spreading.
It is even claimed that China has declared a state of emergency, although this has not been confirmed. HMPV is known to cause flu-like symptoms and can also cause COVID-19-like symptoms. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the virus spreads.
A social media post of an Overcrowding is seen in hospitals and crematoriums. Children’s hospitals are particularly troubled by increasing cases of pneumonia and “white lung.”
Separately, according to a report from Reuters, China’s Disease Control Authority said on Friday that a special committee had been formed to monitor pneumonia. What is the HMPV virus?
Human metapneumovirus is an RNA virus. It belongs to the metapneumovirus class of the Pneumoviridae family. It was first discovered by a Dutch researcher in 2001. Studies have shown that this virus has been around for at least 60 years. This is a common respiratory problem that has spread all over the world. This is mainly due to droplets released by coughing and sneezing. According to the Chinese CDC website, the infection period of this virus is 3-5 days. The immune response to HMPV is too weak to prevent repeated infections.

Who is most at risk?
Children and the elderly are most exposed to the HMPV virus. Even in Corona, these two faced more problems. Faced with the growing epidemic of this virus, China has been urged to remain vigilant. Everyone is asked to maintain cleanliness and not go out without a mask.
