Nimesulide prohibited on animals: To save the endangered vultures, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has banned nimesulide and its formulations for the treatment of animals. From now on, this medicine will not be manufactured for animals, distributed or used. The ministry gave this information on December 30, 2024.
In fact, nimesulide is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used in the treatment of pain, swelling, fever and respiratory system infections in animals. If an animal dies during treatment, it is thrown away. Vultures and other creatures that eat their corpses even die.
Many drugs have also been banned before
Many drugs have already been banned to protect vultures. The use of diclofenac sodium was banned in 2006 and the use of ketoprofen and aceclofenac formulations in 2023. Multidose vials of diclofenac sodium, used in humans, were also banned in 2012 because they were used in animals. Now, only a single-dose vial is available on the market for humans.
What is the reason for the ban?
According to experts, in the 1980s, the number of vultures in India was in the millions. By 1990, 99 percent of the vulture population had disappeared. 10 years passed before we found out. After that, when the causes of death were revealed, demands began to be heard to ban these drugs in the country. The government bans these drugs one by one.
Do side effects only occur in vultures?
Experts say that due to the use of this drug in animals, its side effects have been observed not only in vultures but also in other birds and animals that eat the meat of these dead animals. The ministry also believes that many safe alternatives to these drugs, such as Malaxicam, are also available on the market. Efforts are being made to preserve animals by promoting them and banning these drugs.
