New Delhi: Covid is not over. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that there are more than 300 subvariants of Omicron in circulation and all share similar symptoms. 95 percent of them are BA.5 sublineage and 20 percent are BQ.1 sublineage.
“#Omicron currently has great diversity, with >300 sublineages circulating. 95% of them are BA.5 sublineage, of which 20% are BQ.1 sublineage. We need better surveillance, sequencing and data sharing so that rapid and robust analysis can be carried out routinely,” said Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s Covid technical lead.
7 symptoms of the new COVID strain
Experts said the symptoms caused by the strain of the virus are mild. Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Anita Mathew said many of the new patients are asymptomatic. “Many people have accidental COVID-19. In other words, they are visiting the hospital for other health conditions and test positive for coronavirus infection,” Dr Anita Mathew told PTI.
Symptoms such as loss of smell and taste, which were evident in earlier infections, were not observed in many patients. Many of them report colds and coughs, which is why there aren’t many tests or self-isolation, Dr Mathew added.
