In last year’s budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about the government’s plan to focus on millet. Accordingly, the government also proposed to the UN that 2023 be declared the international year of millet, a proposal that has been accepted.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that the Millets Indian Research Institute in Hyderabad will be supported as the center of excellence for sharing best practices, research and technologies internationally. “We are the largest producer and the second largest exporter of Shree Anna in the world. We grow various types of Shree Anna such as Jowar, Raagi, Bajra, Ramdana, Cheena and Saama among others. These have a number of health benefits and have been an integral part of our diet for centuries,” she said.

“I proudly recognize the enormous service that small farmers perform by contributing to the health of their fellow citizens by growing them,” added the Minister of Finance. This comes as India is at the forefront of popularizing millet, Sitharaman said during his Union Budget speech. Millet consumption promotes nutrition, food security and well-being of farmers, according to the FM.
