Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates talks in depth about his previous steroid cycles vs. his current daily “microdoses” of testosterone
6 Mr. Olympia Bodybuilding Legends Dorian Yachts breaks down your favorite steroid while comparing your past and current cycles in a recent video. Since retirement, Yates has been known to be brutally honest about his steroid use in the past. – as well as his experiments with drugs like ayahuasca in recent years.
Dorian Yates’ most recent comments come from The Threat Podcastwhere he spoke with Dennis James and Milos Sarcev about his first steroid cycle, his favorite steroid of his career, and how he currently uses testosterone post-retirement.
Known as the original massive monster, Dorian Yates ushered in a new age of bodybuilding size during the 1990s and scored six Mr. Olympia wins in the process. He was later succeeded by Ronnie Colemanwhich pushed the boundaries even further, forever altering the “massive monster” aesthetic so commonly known today.
Dorian Yates is not shy about openly admitting that steroids helped him achieve such a massive physique (although only in combination with his one-of-a-kind hard work made it possible). True to form, he spoke unfiltered and in detail during the podcast discussion. Let’s break it down.
Dorian Yates’ Favorite Steroid Substance Revealed
Talking about his journey to discover and use steroids, Dorian Yates was able to easily identify the most effective substance he used. Without a doubt, his favorite steroid of all time was Dianabol.
“I had emotional contact with that: Dianabol. For me, that was the best steroid I have ever taken. During the off-season, it was my favorite. If I had to pick one damn thing, it would be that… It’s the best steroid you can take.”

But Dianabol was not the first substance he tried when entering the world of PEDs. Dorian Yates also talked about the first steroid cycle he took: Methandriol.
“My first cycle: 15 milligrams a day of Tunaject, which was a stand-alone Methandriol from India with some B vitamins. I gained about 20 pounds in six weeks.”
Dorian Yates explains his current testosterone use, calling it “microdosing”
Dorian Yates, after his retirement, went through some trouble coming off steroids. As many already know, long-term steroid use can cause the body to no longer produce enough testosterone naturally. Typically, an athlete will undergo testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to maintain their normal levels.
Dorian Yates initially didn’t do that and crashed hard. In the documentary Generation Iron Network, Dorian Yates: The Original Massive MonsterYates and his family describe the struggle he had after retirement due to coming off steroids ‘cold turkey’.

Yates eventually decided to use TRT, which is a treatment she still uses to this day. But it seems that he has recently been experimenting with toning down TRT and adding “microdosing” testosterone.
“Then recently because I’m on TRT. The doctor I’m working with said, ‘How about we try this? We lower his TRT and put in small microdoses of HCG to bring the natural back, and we have a little bit of both. Sounds great in theory, but I did it for two weeks and felt like shit… So I take 200 milligrams for 10 days, but I take 20 milligrams a day subcutaneously. Talking with some specialists and experimenting with myself, that this causes less discomfort since it is like a daily pulse… That’s like 600 milligrams a month.”
Dorian Yates goes on to explain that the use of TRT and other testosterone treatments is only to keep it at normal, healthy levels. You are in no way trying to use additional testosterone to build more muscle.
“It’s just about being healthy right now. I’m not trying to have a high level of testosterone because I want to build muscle. I just want to maintain and maintain my health.”
Dorian Yates talking about his personal steroid use is nothing new. He has also been open to sharing his opinion and warnings about the dangers of mass steroid abuse that seem to be normalized in modern bodybuilding.
The Yates man’s goal is to maintain a healthy life after retirement and to use his experience and knowledge to speak honestly about those experiences. Hopefully, those words can help not only inspire but also educate young bodybuilders to achieve greatness and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
