8 patients and 44 staffers of Yerawada mental hospital test Covid positive

Eight patients and 44 employees have been infected with coronavirus since January 1 at the Yerawada Regional Psychiatric Hospital.

Last year six patients died from Covid and 386 of them were infected in the regional psychiatric hospital. Due to the communicable nature of omicron Variant of Covid, the authorities are taking extra precautionary measures by establishing separate isolation rooms, one for men and women.

Two other quarantine rooms have been set up for patients recently admitted to the hospital.

Dr. Abhijit Phadnis, Medical Superintendent of the Regional Mental Hospital, said, “We have patients seeking treatment from 12 districts in Maharashtra, including eight from Marathwada like Latur, Beed, Parbhani, Aurangabad and others. From the western districts of Maharashtra like Satara Ahmednagar, Solapur there are also patients seeking hospital admission.”

New patients will initially need to stay in the quarantine room before they are allowed to interact with others. Social distancing it’s a challenge with mentally ill patients in the hospital, Dr. Phadnis said. There are currently 1,107 patients admitted to the hospital, which has a staff of 650 people.
