Charity Commission dismisses Good Law Project case against GambleAware
The Good Law Project celebrated In May, the Gambling Commission launched an inquiry at his request into the charity GambleAware. Jolyon’s group launched its attack because part of its funding comes from the gambling industry (as usual) and its campaigns advocate self-control for adults rather than a complete shutdown of the gambling industry:
“GambleAware runs high-profile advertising campaigns that experts say ‘imply that gamblers are a unique category of people who are personally responsible for their losses’, reflecting ‘a narrative promoted by the gambling industry that attempts to shift blame for gambling-related harms away from harmful products aggressively marketed to individual gamblers’. Rather than helping people stop gambling, the charity blames the very people it should be helping and advises them to gamble ‘responsibly’.”
Apparently, that means it is “breaching the Charity Act” by “failing to fulfil its charitable objectives” of helping problem gamblers. Unsurprisingly, the Charity Commission has acted fairly quickly. open and close the case:
“We have received the necessary assurance that the Trustees have managed their affairs as would be expected, including by taking appropriate steps to ensure their independence from the gambling industry. The Trustees have demonstrated to the Commission that they have appropriate processes in place to ensure they are promoting their objectives.”
