Collaborative effort to address type 1 diabetes in national health policies

The roundtable brought together more than 60 diverse stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)The meeting brought together members of the Indian government, non-governmental organisations, corporate leaders, industry networks, bilateral development agencies, patient organisations, medical institutions, academia, researchers, clinicians, diabetes experts, support groups, advocates, paediatric endocrinologists and people living with type 1 diabetes. Using a structured participatory meeting methodology, participants worked collaboratively to review and synthesise urgent recommendations and actions related to type 1 diabetes in India. The aim was to provide practical recommendations to strengthen the National NCD Policy, ensuring that it includes specific provisions for people living with type 1 diabetes.

DEESHA’s role in advancing the treatment of type 1 diabetes

DEESHA, an informal, non-political alliance focused on type 1 diabetes mellitus, played a key role in organizing the debate. The alliance is dedicated to raising awareness, fostering collaboration, and promoting the improvement of type 1 diabetes mellitus-related programs. Its main functions include:

Knowledge Aggregator: Compilation and dissemination of relevant information on type 1 diabetes.

Convener: Bringing together key stakeholders for focused discussions and promoting initiatives.

Collaborator: Partnering with diverse entities to promote type 1 diabetes care and improve policies.

During the panel discussion, Dr Laxmikant Palo, Executive Director, PPHF, highlighted the need for improved policies, strategies and operational systems to ensure equitable coverage and resource allocation for people with type 1 diabetes. Mr Rohan Arora, Project Director, Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation, highlighted the importance of including patient organisations in policy formulation and connecting every patient with type 1 diabetes to a patient organisation at the time of diagnosis.

The roundtable concluded with a consensus on expanding collaborative efforts and integrating these recommendations into national health policies, marking significant progress in addressing the needs of people living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.
