Why is anesthesia given?

A dose of anesthesia is administered to relieve pain during surgery. Anesthesia is actually a mixture of drugs that, when ingested, prevent the nervous system from sending signals to the brain. The patient should not feel pain or move during the surgical cut, which is why the dose of anesthesia is administered by injection. As a result, the patient is not aware of the operation and remains unconscious.

How is the dose of anesthesia decided during surgery?

Whenever a patient undergoes surgery, an anesthesiologist is present in the operating room along with the doctors. This specialist decides the dose of anesthesia based on the patient’s age, health condition, type of surgery, and the extent of the procedure. If during the patient’s operation, these conditions are ignored and the dose is reduced, then the patient may regain consciousness during the operation itself and suffer more pain.

However, this condition is not fatal. But if the patient receives more anesthesia than necessary during the operation, he may even die. A higher dose of anesthesia can reduce the patient’s blood pressure and pulse. In addition, the patient may even suffer from a stroke or heart attack. Often, due to an excessive dose, patients even become paralyzed and brain dead.
