Menopause: How to lose weight – not diet or exercise, just lifestyle change

There are many factors that can contribute to weight gain before, during and after menopause, and understanding them is beneficial for anyone who wants to lose weight. Express.co.uk spoke to campbell pipea nutritionist and metabolic balance coach on stress and how it can hinder a person’s weight loss efforts.

First, Pippa explained how stress directly affects the organs used for weight loss.

She explained: “When we’re super stressed, whether it’s from stress from over-exercising and dieting, divorce, boss, whatever, our body goes into a panic.

“Imagine it as if we were killing a tiger or running from a tiger.

“So, that’s our flight. That is our fight or flight response.

“So when we’re in that state, our body isn’t going to prioritize burning fat.

“Good because? We are about to be killed,” she commented.

“Everything shuts down, the gut, the hormones, everything just shuts down because the most important thing is to push the sugar into the cells so we can run.

“So when we’re stressed, super stressed, it’s going to affect insulin.

“We can have high blood sugar, insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain.”

Many people are looking to lower their calorie intake and increase their exercise to help them lose weight.

Pippa said: “It’s really important for women to realize that exercise is good, but too much exercise is not good.

“Diet always comes first, and I think people can incorporate their exercise. Don’t go from zero to 100.

“But if they’re thinking they can get more exercise than a bad diet, I’d be looking at their diet first.”

As for a good diet, Pippa said to “focus on nutrition.”

“I’m not saying calories don’t count. [but] portion control is very important.

“What I want people to think about is the nutrition of their food; think protein, thinking ‘is half your plate full of vegetables?’”

Following this, Pippa suggested looking at the physical effects of a good, nutritious diet, for example clearer skin or more energy.
