Navjot Singh Sidhu addressed a press conference in Amritsar on November 21 declaring that his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu was cancer-free. He shared how his wife beat stage four cancer and emphasized the role of diet and lifestyle changes in her recovery. The cricket commentator has since received a lot of backlash from the medical community. But after oncologists questioned his claim that a strict diet helped his wife beat stage 4 cancer, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday clarified that the diet plan was implemented in consultation with doctors and should be considered a “treatment facilitation.”

In a video message posted on X on Monday, Sidhu said, “I want to say that a doctor is like God to me and doctors have always been my priority. I have a doctor (Navjot Kaur Sidhu) at home. Everything we have done was done in consultation with doctors in a collaborative process.”

However, oncologists at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital have warned that cancer patients should not delay or discontinue their treatment by following unproven remedies.

The former Punjab Congress chief also shared the diet plan and wrote, “My wife’s cancer journey involved surgeries, chemotherapy, hormonal and targeted therapy, positivity and determination to fight cancer, which was facilitated by a strict Diet plan inspired by Indian Ayurveda, the Nobel Prize winner. Winning research by Yoshinori Ohsumi for discoveries of autophagy mechanisms and observation by eminent physicians around the world.”

The diet chart included water with lemon, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, walnuts, beet juice, carrot and amla, among other items. He also consumed neem leaves, but sugar, dairy and wheat were eliminated from his diet, he said. Sidhu also mentioned that his wife was given water with a pH level of seven.

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s cancer-related diet sparks debate

On November 23, Dr CS Pramesh, director of Tata Memorial Hospital, posted a video of Sidhu’s press conference on X and said: “Parts of the video imply that starving cancer by avoiding dairy products and sugar , and by consuming haldi (turmeric) and neem, he helped cure his ‘incurable’ cancer.”

He added: “Please do not believe or be fooled by these statements, regardless of who they come from. These are unscientific and unfounded recommendations. “It was surgery and chemotherapy, which are evidence-based treatments, that freed her from cancer, not haldi, neem or other similar remedies.”

After her first video, several doctors refuted the diet claims. Several expressed concern about myths surrounding diet for cancer treatment. Cancer requires proper treatment and no scientific research has proven the role of diet alone in curing cancer.
