We’ll talk about the diseases that made headlines in India this year. Outbreaks of Nipah, Zika, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Kyasanur forest disease have been reported for a decade and we are now faced with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nipah virus: Zoonotic paramyxovirus endemic to Southeast Asia. The first outbreak in India occurred in Kerala in May 2018. This virus is spread by bats or pigs.
Zika virus: The first outbreak in India, transmitted by Aedes aegypti, occurred in Kerala in July 2021.
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF): A virus that has caused epidemics in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
Chandipura virus: Transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and sandflies, the first outbreak in India occurred in Maharashtra in 1965.
Dengue: The first epidemic in India, transmitted by Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus, occurred in Chennai in 1780.
Japanese encephalitis: An emerging viral infection in India.

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD): An emerging viral infection in India.

Other emerging viral infections in India include: Hantavirus, chikungunya virus, human enterovirus-71 (EV-71), influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses. Most outbreaks reported in India occur in the western part of the country.
