End of year 2024: What new diseases will spread in India in 2024? Today we’re going to talk about some special memories from the past year. We’ll talk about the diseases that made headlines in India this year. Outbreaks of Nipah, Zika, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Kyasanur forest disease have been reported for a decade and we are now faced with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nipah virus: Zoonotic paramyxovirus endemic to Southeast Asia. The first outbreak in India occurred in Kerala in May 2018. This virus is spread by bats or pigs.
Zika virus: The first outbreak in India, transmitted by Aedes aegypti, occurred in Kerala in July 2021.
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF): A virus that has caused epidemics in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
Chandipura virus: Transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and sandflies, the first outbreak in India occurred in Maharashtra in 1965.
Dengue: The first epidemic in India, transmitted by Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus, occurred in Chennai in 1780.
Japanese encephalitis: An emerging viral infection in India.

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD): An emerging viral infection in India.

Other emerging viral infections in India include: Hantavirus, chikungunya virus, human enterovirus-71 (EV-71), influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses. Most outbreaks reported in India occur in the western part of the country.
