It’s been quite a while since mental health became a priority in most people’s lives, especially after the pandemic. There are a lot of studies showing that the number of depressed and lonely people has increased dramatically in the last three years. And while most of us know that mental stress leads to physical ailments, it’s important to talk about it and seek help.

However, where does one start? To break down some of the basics of internal and external health, we caught up with famed sports scientist and clinical psychologist Shyamal Vallabhjee, who recently collaborated with Hyperice, which makes percussive massage devices, and has been working with celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Hrithik Roshan, Prabhas, Sania Mirza, and Leander Paes, among others. We spoke with him about his approach of combining science and ancient spiritual practices to achieve general well-being.

You have talked a lot about health in terms of internal and external factors. To elaborate.
If we look at internal health, understand our thoughts and negative thoughts bring negative effects on our body. So, shift your thoughts to gratitude, forgiveness, kindness, and love. This method of changing energy helps in recovery. For external health, walk barefoot on the grass or on the beach. Absorb sunlight before 9 am every day.

According to you, what are the five most important mantras to keep fit at any age?
Have a good night and sleep. If you don’t have 60 percent of the time to recover from what you’re doing, then don’t do it in the first place. Eating fibrous whole plant-based foods like processed foods harms gut health. Always make time for community and family. That’s where the happiness quotient comes from. Look at your failure as a learning curve.

Who do you turn to when you need help for yourself?
That is a fantastic question. I have been battling some anxiety for the past eight months and have some of the best authors and coaches from around the world at my disposal. But I don’t go to famous people or buy self-help books. I speak to people that the world doesn’t see as coaches or people that no one would listen to. They have a special place for me. I spend time with my parents. I tell people, when you’re going through a tough time, don’t buy another self-help book or follow someone else on Instagram, reach out to the people you love and spend time with them. Your neurological system will reset and function. Do not rush to introduce yourself to the world, be kind to yourself.
