Suranne Jones has revealed that she finally feels free from the weight of her mental health issues on Wednesday.
The actress, 43, has been outspoken about her mental health in the past as she struggled to deal with her mother’s death in 2016 and then her father’s death in January last year.
Suranne has openly discussed her mental health journey and admits she now feels like she’s ‘moved on’ and is no longer on medication.

Talking to Angela Scanlon at the A million thanks podcast, she explained: ‘It came about when I was talking about doing Gentleman Jack, and it’s the loss of my parents and the beginning of my mental health journey, which led me to, I’m Victoria, on medication, now not on medication.’
Surrane, who played the lead role of pioneering lesbian Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack and the title character in I Am Victoria, has discussed how her own personal experiences shaped the shows.
She continued: ‘What I can say is that I’ve moved on and I really feel like I’m moving on. As if I had moved through it and then passed it.

She added, “I did an article recently, and I said to the reporter, ‘Don’t focus too much on my father’s death and the sadness of it all,’ because I feel like I’ve done something very positive with Gentleman.” Jack and with I am Victoria.
“I feel like the next chapter of my life is about letting go of the weight of everything that happened to me.
“And feeling freer to go, ah now of course the grieving issue at all different points and the mental health journey is a mental health journey, you know, you have to take care of that like you take care of your physical health.” .

Suranne concluded: ‘That’s all very important, but I feel like I’m free from the weight of that… I had my son and lost my mother in a very close period of time.
“Then I was doing a West End show called Frozen, which was a very heavy show about losing a child and pedophilia and forgiveness and whatever the mix of all of that is.
It really affected me. And I had a meltdown on stage and couldn’t finish the last week of the race.

Suranne was previously prescribed medication in the wake of the death of her mother, Jenny in 2016, then while filming for Gentleman Jack in January 2021, her father, Chris, passed away from COVID 19.
Suranne admitted her anxiety peaked when lockdown restrictions began to ease as she mourned her father and revealed she was on medication in August.
‘I look at Gentleman Jack and say, wow, we did that, because other people. Worldwide. We’re also going through some terrible times, because collectively we’ve been through some terrible things.
This comes after she revealed that playing trailblazing lesbian Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack helped her through her battle with anxiety and depression.

She admitted that the ‘robust’ and ‘positive’ mental health of her characters inspired her.
Speaking at the Gentleman Jack season two press launch in Halifax, she explained: “I’ve talked a lot about my own mental health. Anne Lister’s mental health was very strong and she was very positive.
“He felt things very deeply, but he managed to dust himself off and move on. That’s what you have to do.
That is something he has taught us all. I feel when I look at it.
