BENGALURU: For the first time, the draft Karnataka Youth Policy-2022, which was published on Wednesday, put an emphasis on the mental and physical health of young people. The final policy is expected to be released on June 15, Sports and Youth Empowerment Minister KC Narayana Gowda said.

The draft policy focuses on young people in the 15-29 age group and their education, training, employment, entrepreneurship, health and wellness, sports and fitness, arts and culture, as well as the development of a values-based leadership.

The policy suggested restructuring the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, including Yuva’s budget in the annual budget and the formation of a Youth Advisory Group. The policy also talked about education and filling the gaps through training programs.

“New challenges, such as technological progress and humanitarian crises like Covid, highlighted the need to rethink the state’s approach to youth development. The policy focuses on youth development and youth for development,” R Balasubramaniam, chairman of the policy think tank and founder of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, told reporters.

As of October 2021, the state government had constituted a 13-member think tank to frame the Karnataka Youth Policy. In 2012, he had framed the Youth Policy when Jagadish Shettar was CM.

The draft policy is available in the public domain and the department has given ten days to receive comments from various quarters. “Once this is done, we will present it to the cabinet for approval and release,” the minister said.
