Stranger Things’ David Harbour opens up about mental health struggles

Strange things Y black widow Star David Harbor has opened up about his mental health struggles and finding fame later in life in an interview with The big problem magazine.

The actor was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 26 “after an episode that landed [him] in an institution,” which he believes may be a common byproduct of living in poverty.

“I’ve definitely been in and out of the system. And there were times in my life where I very easily could have ended up on the streets, but luckily I had a family that could [help],” he said.

It also highlighted how the social stigma around mental illness can be linked to not having enough money.

“There’s a component to mental illness that requires medication, but there’s also a very social component to mental illness. It’s not like a broken leg. What defines [mental illness] It is social inadequacy. But it’s very socially inappropriate, in a sense, not to have enough money to live on.”

Harbor also talked about finding fame later in life and the strangeness of navigating it all.

“I got to the age of 35 and had been pretty successful in my opinion,” Harbor shared. “I was able to pay rent on an apartment, have food on the table, and I was very happy about it.”

And so Strange things it happened, and it basically turned Harbor into an overnight sensation. She even ended up getting a part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Red Guardian in black widow.

“It was unlike anything I had ever experienced in my career,” Harbor recalled. “One by one I started getting tons of text messages saying, ‘Strange things It’s amazing, I love this show!’ I have never experienced that before or since. It was truly a magical moment. The reviews and the numbers hadn’t come in, but at that point I knew it was something special that really moved people.”

Strange things Season 4 will premiere in two parts, on May 27 and July 1, streaming on Netflix. Part 1 is now streaming.
