We tried a $220-a-month upmarket fitness club with 82 spin bikes. The silent disco-style fitness class pushed us to the limit.

We wore “silent disco” style headphones, which played loud music and Rees’s instructions. This was because the class was held in an open part of the gym and could disturb others. Sprint intervals were a challenge for us: we work out regularly, but we mostly do weight lifting. The other 10 people, some who seemed to be regulars, were running almost twice as fast as us.
