ACS completes mental health hackathon

IT professional association ACS and the Australian Institute of Analytics Professionals have completed a unique hackathon aimed at harnessing data analytics skills to improve mental health services.

The ACS Melbourne Docklands Innovation Hub Data Hack event was designed to help mental health charity SANE Australia improve the services it provides to the community.

A team of students and data experts provided valuable insights into SANE’s operations, from call center operations to the growing demand for services, particularly in Victoria.

Jessica Kaaden, Director of People and Communications at SANE and part of the hackathon judging panel, said the results of the event will be valuable.

“Participants discovered some amazing ideas for SANE that will help us improve service delivery so we can help more people seeking help. Participants were engaged, smart, and went beyond data to discover real insights,” she said.

The Data Hack was supported by the Victorian Government, run in conjunction with SheLovesData and attended by over 35 tech workers.

All of the participants were very committed to using their data analysis skills and providing solutions that could make a real difference in the services provided to people with mental health conditions,” said Dr. Rod Dilnutt, ACS Branch President. Victory.

“We had a purpose, and all the teams produced some valuable solutions that SANE could take with them and expand further.”

The demand for SANE services has been on the rise as a result of the pandemic and other stressors. Meanwhile, recent census data shows that 8.8% of Australians have a long-term mental health condition.
