Health authorities taking no chances with monkeypox – Stabroek News

Although Guyana has only two confirmed cases of the monkeypox virus, health officials here are taking no chances, and according to Dr. Tracey Bovell, physician-in-charge of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases, the facility has reserved space to care for about 37 patients.

And should the need arise, the hospital, which now treats illnesses other than the COVID-19 for which it was originally established, has the capacity to serve an additional 22 beds. The space would not only serve confirmed cases but also suspected cases. In addition, other regions have also prepared spaces to accommodate monkeypox patients.

Dr Bovell was speaking at the time at a forum organized by the Ministry of Health under the theme “Monkeypox Outbreak Reports” which was held at Duke Lodge, Kingston.
