Amanda Dabrowski murder: Results of mental health exam of man charged expected soon

WORCESTER, Mass. — The murder trial of the man charged in the 2019 slaying of Amanda Dabrowski is inching toward a December trial.

But before Carlos Asencio’s trial begins, his defense team’s extensive examination of his mental health is expected to be completed, as Asencio prepares to present an insanity defense in murder.

Dabrowski, 31, of Webster, was killed at O’Connor’s Restaurant on West Boylston Street in Worcester in July 2019, allegedly at the hands of Asencio, a co-worker he briefly dated. Several patrons stepped in to restrain Asencio, who police say repeatedly stabbed Amanda in front of diners.

The case has been delayed by the closure of courts related to the pandemic and the psychiatric evaluation that Asencio is undergoing.

In Worcester Superior Court on Monday, Asencio’s defense attorney said the results of that evaluation will be known soon.

“My expert has examined my client multiple times,” Griffin said. “I hope to have the report from him in the next 2-3 weeks.”

Griffin said he would turn over the results of that test to prosecutors, who plan to have their own expert evaluate Asencio.

Ed Dabrowski, Amanda Dabrowski’s father, released a statement after Monday’s hearing.

“Through this process, we have learned to be patient,” Dabrowski said. “You will finally get what you deserve.”

Both sides also agreed Monday to allow prosecutors to inspect and copy some materials seized from the district clerk’s office.

The case returns to court in November.
