There are many diseases in the human body, one of them is arachnoid cyst. You have hardly heard about this disease. Actually, arachnoid cyst is a fluid-filled sac, which develops on the brain and spine. This cyst formed in the internal part of the body is not a tumor and cancer. If these cysts become very large then it creates other problems in the body.
Arachnoid cysts are the most common type of brain cyst. These are mostly congenital, or present at the time of birth. Primary arachnoid cysts: Secondary arachnoid cysts can also occur as a result of head injury or trauma. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs, not tumors. Let us now tell you what is its treatment. If you have any problem related to brain then you can consult our doctor directly, to consult doctor Click here,
If the cyst is large and continues to grow or is causing symptoms, your doctor may treat it in the following ways:
- Endoscopic procedures: The doctor first examines the location and size of the cyst and then recommends an endoscopic procedure to remove the cyst. Endoscopic procedures use a small, thin tube with a camera and small instruments. These minimally invasive procedures use small incisions. This means that the patient takes less time to recover.
- open craniotomy fenestration: During this procedure, your doctor removes the part of the cyst from the head. These incisions allow fluid to drain from the cyst. Your body absorbs the fluid over time. After removing the cyst, the doctor seals it with stitches.
- shuntingYour doctor will insert a cyst peritoneal shunt (also called a CP shunt) into the cyst. A shunt is a device made up of a catheter (thin tube) and a valve. Fluid drains out through tubes in your abdomen. Your body absorbs the fluid. The doctor will keep the shunt in place so that the fluid can be completely drained.
- surgical removal: Doctors usually remove spinal arachnoid cysts. Your doctor makes an incision near the cyst and removes it. If it is not possible to remove the cyst because of its location or size, your doctor may recommend a shunt to drain it. During this, doctors also give special advice related to medicines and food to the patient so that the patient can get relief soon.

Where do arachnoid cysts grow?
Arachnoid cysts usually grow in the brain (intracranial arachnoid cysts) or they grow on the spinal cord (spinal cysts). Both types develop on a thin membrane that covers and protects the brain and spinal cord. Doctors call this membrane the arachnoid membrane because it looks like a spider’s web.
Cysts can form in many areas of the brain. Most arachnoid cysts grow in the middle fossa area in front of the ear. They can also develop in the suprasellar region (behind the eyes) and posterior fossa (at the base of the skull).
These areas of the brain and spinal cord contain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is a kind of fluid that provides cushion to the brain and spinal cord. It also transports nutrients and removes waste from the brain. Arachnoid cysts form when cerebrospinal fluid collects and builds up inside a sac.
What are the symptoms of arachnoid cyst?
Arachnoid cysts are usually not visible. Symptoms of arachnoid cysts can range from very mild to very severe. The symptoms seen during an arachnoid cyst depend on the location and size of the cyst and whether it can be caused by nerves, brain or spinal cord pressure or not. When symptoms do occur, they are more likely to appear before the age of 20. Symptoms of arachnoid cysts may appear as follows:
- nausea and vomiting
- feeling extremely tired or weak
- lump on the head or spine
- delay in child development
- Hydrocephalus due to blockage of normal cerebrospinal fluid circulation
- Endocrine (hormone) problems, such as early puberty
What causes arachnoid cyst?
Most arachnoid cysts appear at birth. They usually occur in the womb during the early weeks of pregnancy. In fact, according to doctors, it is not yet certain that what is the reason for the formation of arachnoid cyst.
Sometimes it can be because of your family history, so the doctor thinks that genetics may be causing them to develop. People who have certain health conditions, such as arachnoiditis or Marfan syndrome, may be more likely to develop arachnoid cysts.
Often, arachnoid cysts grow after some type of childhood head injury, surgery, or infection. When this happens, doctors call them secondary arachnoid cysts.
Tests for Arachnoid Cysts
Symptoms of arachnoid cysts are often similar to symptoms of other conditions. If you or your child has symptoms of arachnoid cysts, you should see a doctor right away. The doctor will suggest some tests based on your symptoms. Use of imaging tests including MRI and CT scan.
