Smokers urged to give Stoptober a go and improve their mental wellbeing

People in Oxfordshire who smoke are encouraged to consider taking part in Stoptober this year and see the benefits quitting smoking could bring to their mental well-being.

Statistics show that there is a higher prevalence of smokers among people with mental health problems. That’s why Oxfordshire County Council and its partners are joining forces to support residents who smoke to quit this October.

Councilor Mark Lygo, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Equality, said: “This year, we want to dispel some of the myths about mental wellness and smoking and help people quit for good.

“Often people will start smoking in the first place, or be discouraged from quitting, based on the myth that smoking can help relieve stress and alleviate mental health difficulties. However, nicotine is a physically addictive substance, so relief is often simply the result of giving your body more—a “dose.”

“Once someone can beat that addiction, most will find that their mental well-being is significantly improved by knowing they are no longer dependent on cigarettes, not to mention the financial and physical health benefits that come with it.

“We know it can be daunting for people with mental health problems to try to quit, but there is plenty of support available to help overcome barriers, regardless of your situation.”

Rose Hombo, Deputy Director for Quality at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Smoking is a cause of poor mental health in the entire population. Indirectly, through its impact on physical health, income, and employment, and directly, by increasing the risk of some mental health conditions (such as depression and schizophrenia) and through the creation of addictions, which inhibit people’s mental well-being.

“In this month of Stoptober, we are organizing a series of meaningful and practical activities to help you as a smoker start your journey to quitting for good. There are many benefits to quitting smoking, and yours can start right away. There will be a range of activities within all of our trusted NHS sites, all free to access.”

Nicotine replacement therapy and e-cigarettes are available to help people through Stop for Life Oxon, Oxfordshire County Council’s local smoking cessation service.
