DAYTON, Ohio — Body camera footage released recently shows how long it took an Ohio officer to wind down a mental health call before he was stabbed by a suspect.

In the video shared by dayton nowViewers can hear officers using numerous de-escalation methods to talk to 29-year-old Tyler Patrick, apparently building trust with the individual.

“Do you feel homicidal, suicidal? I came here to talk to you. Do you have a health worker you talk to? Can we go to Grandview to get you checked out?” Officer George Kloos asked in the video.

The suspect told officers he did not want to go to the hospital, but said he was hearing voices and continually told police that someone was at his home trying to hurt him.

“These officers were doing a phenomenal job in de-escalation. We are extremely proud of the patience they showed, and I’ll be honest, I don’t know what else they could have done in these situations,” Major Jason Hall of the Dayton Police Department told Dayton Now.

Officers talked to Patrick for several minutes before he lunged at Officer George Kloos and stabbed him in the neck with a knife. Body camera video captures other responding officers subduing Patrick and removing the knife from his hand.

According to Hall, officers were familiar with the suspect before responding to the call and said he had made violent threats in prior interactions. Because of this, they thought it was safer to send police instead of mental health officials.

Patrick now faces aggravated felony assault charges.

Officer Kloos survived the attack and is currently at home recovering, according to Dayton Now.
