A father who stabbed his four-year-old son to death wants him returned to the community, a court has heard.

Almost eight years have passed since David Janzow killed his 4-year-old son Luca while suffering from bipolar disorder in adelaide.

He was later found not guilty for mental incompetence and ordered to spend the rest of his life in a secure mental health facility.

In 2018, Janzow was given a day’s supervised release from James Nash House and later sought to have supervision relaxed.

His legal team has asked the Supreme Court to consider releasing Janzow from the mental health center and continuing to receive psychological treatment in the community, the Adelaide Advertiser informed.

Janzow is understood to have spent time at Ashton House, which is considered a “reduction” facility for James Nash House inpatients.

The facility has lower security and aims to help patients readjust to society.

“This is our request for release from James Nash House to reside at a certain address,” his lawyer Stephen Ey told the court on Monday.

“The court should already have the annual report on my client’s health, and we are asking for another report.”

Prosecutors told the court they did not object.

“That report will probably take about two months (to complete), and the prosecution requires only one report given the circumstances of this case,” Lucy Boord said.

During Janzow’s trial in 2015, it was revealed that he had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had an extensive history of depression.

Janzow remains in pre-trial detention in a mental health facility and will reappear in court in April.
