Tulsa dog daycares take precautions amid canine influenza outbreak

TULSA, OK. — As canine flu cases rise in Tulsa, many daycare centers, boarders and dog trainers are taking precautions to keep pets safe.

As soon as pet owners walk through the door of Spirit Ranch in Tulsa, they must fill out a form stating that their dog has been vaccinated against canine influenza and is not displaying any symptoms.

Staff say they are also tracking where the dogs have been for the past two weeks. If the dogs have been at another daycare, boarding school or dog training center, they will not be allowed to stay at Spirit Ranch amid the outbreak.

The office manager, Niki Mincks, believes that they have prevented an outbreak of canine influenza by taking strict precautions.

“If there are outbreaks in other places, they can’t be here,” Mincks said. “If there are hot spots elsewhere, they can’t come here.”

Staff say they are also spraying the interior with disinfectant more than usual.

The owner told 2 News Oklahoma that they have about 50 percent fewer dogs than they normally would this time of year because of the outbreak. A quick search of Tulsa doggie day care centers will show that they are very aware of the outbreak and are taking precautions, but not all of them require vaccinations.
