Why Patients’ Mental Well-being Is Crucial In Treatment Of Cancer | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: Regular counseling of patients and ensuring their mental well-being is a crucial part of cancer treatment, doctors said at a camp organized in the city to mark World Cancer Day on Friday.
At the Dadri community health center camp, patients were also screened for symptoms of mental distress. “It is extremely important to identify symptoms of mental distress in people. In cancer patients, this is even more crucial because they must be put under a lot of stress during the course of treatment. Early diagnosis, proper treatment and ensuring a patient’s mental well-being play a key role in fighting infection,” Sunil Dohre, Additional Medical Director.
At the camp, at least 15 patients were found to display symptoms of mental distress.
In Ghaziabad, oncologists from Yasoda Hospital organized a virtual awareness camp and highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and mental wellness of a patent. Not only the patient, they said, but also his family members should be properly counseled during treatment.
“Once a person is diagnosed with cancer, the first step in treatment is counseling and preparation for the medical procedure. While the patient undergoes extensive treatment, the family has to bear the expense and general mental pressure. The mental well-being of the family gives the patient the necessary courage. A dedicated team of doctors from the psychiatry department closely follows the mental state of a cancer patient at every stage. With regular counseling, we have seen patients recover even in the fourth stage of cancer,” said Dr. Deepak Jain, Senior Oncologist at Yashoda Hospital.
Doctors said that the human body continued to show symptoms of any infection, but it was crucial to identify them. “In cancer cases, it could be heaviness in the lower abdomen, which is often confused with a mere gastric problem. But it is important to visit the doctor first. Other symptoms may be soreness in the mouth for more than 2 weeks, a lump in the breast or elsewhere in the body, and blood in the urine. These are some of the early signs,” said an oncologist.
According to the Globocan 2020 report, India sees more than 13 lakh cancer cases every year.
