TN: Pudukottai launches ‘Aran’ to help kids face mental, physical, academic issues | Trichy News – Times of India

TRICHY: Pudukottai district administration has launched an initiative called ‘aran’, which extends a helping hand so that school children and adolescents open up about issues that affect their studies and their mental health.
District Collector Kavitha Ramu said the goal is to help children and young people access information and support related to their rights, needs, safety and protection, legal assistance, mental and physical health, sexual and reproductive health, as well as career. academic through interdepartmental coordination and public participation. “school children and adolescents are bogged down by many problems, including sexual abuse, not being able to cope with studies, failed suicide attempts, etc. Such incidents prompted me to search for a solution,” the collector told TOI.
Children can report their problems by calling the toll-free number 1800 425 2411 and the WhatsApp number 94433 14417. While the toll-free number will be handled by a team of counselors, the WhatsApp number will be handled by the collector himself. On the purpose of the child helpline when the Child Line 1098 helpline is already in use, Kavitha Ramu said they wanted the system to be more comprehensive. “They can complain about any problems they face in school, family and society. The basic idea is that they feel free to open up.”
Counselors from the welfare department have been hired to take the calls. Some mental health experts will also be part of the program. The district administration has also planned to form block-level committees made up of Nehru Yuva Kendra volunteers who can visit the schools in their block and raise awareness among the children.
The administration has released two videos of school children taking pledges about their rights and other things in Tamil and English, which will be posted on social media.
