Gambling addict Paul Ashdale certainly left a mark on the town of Emmerdale during his one-year stint on the ITV soap opera.
Paul was determined to rekindle his romance with Mandy Dingle when he showed up in town, but his gambling problems soon got the better of him and he began physically beating his son Vinny for the slightest mistake.
The villain, who entered in April 2020, was killed in a huge barn explosion just a year after Jimmy King crashed his truck into the structure, knocking out Liv Flaherty and killing Paul.
But what about actor Reece Dinsdale’s real life away from the cameras? of his passage through Coronation Street to his mental health struggles, we take a look.
famous family
Reece has a very famous member of his family who actually had an iconic career in Hollywood.
He married Northern Irish actress Zara Turner, who has appeared on a number of television shows over the years, including Sliding Doors alongside Hollywood legends Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah.
He’s also been in everything from Father Ted to The Bill.
The loving couple share two children, Elwy and Luca.
mental health battle
Reece has admitted that he battles crippling body dysmorphia, a mental health condition that causes a person to spend a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance, which often go unnoticed by others.
Speaking to The Mirror, he said: “I have never in my life felt comfortable after things that were said when I was young.
“I would always see myself as twice as big as I am. It has been the ruin of my life. But I work with it.
“I have had some help and my family is fantastic and supportive. I live with it every day. But I also work with that every day.”
The star launched an online series during lockdown to help others combat the condition and was overwhelmed with the response he received from fans.
But things turned dark for Reece when he suffered vile online abuse from social media trolls, explaining to This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “You have the usual trolls on Twitter. I’m in the public eye, so I look forward to that.
“I don’t care that they hate Paul, that’s great, I’ve done my job, I’m so glad people hate him, he’s done such despicable things to his son, so that’s fine. That comes with the territory.”
Reece continued, “What doesn’t come with the territory is when people are personal about your appearance, or whatever about you. I’m Reece Dinsdale and then there’s a character named Paul Ashdale.
“Unfortunately, I have to look like Paul Ashdale, and I think people get lost sometimes. They don’t realize that you can say things that hurt.”
The star admitted that he can’t even look at himself in scenes, as he can only “forget” himself on the third watch. Writing on Twitter, he admitted that “even the smallest comments” about his appearance “can still run deep.”
Rival Soap Season
Paul from Emmerdale wasn’t even Reece’s most famous soap opera character, as he appeared as Gail Platt’s husband, Joe McIntyre, on Coronation Street between 2008 and 2010.
Father of Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan), Joe found himself dealing with mounting debt during his time on the cobblestones and planned to fake his own death while at Lake Windermere, with his life insurance payout for Gail.
However, Joe actually died while completing the stunt, leaving Gail on trial for his murder.
Speaking about her role on Corrie, Reece admitted to the Daily Record in 2009: “My reason for joining was 90 percent because of Michelle. [Keegan].
“I was watching the show one night and I saw her. I turned to my wife and said, ‘That girl is brilliant.’
And the next day, his agent contacted him to see if he wanted to play Tina’s dad on the show.
But Reece left the Brassic star “embarrassed” with his anecdote, confessing: “From the beginning we got along very well. I told her that story and I think I embarrassed her.
But we are good partners. She is a charming girl and a talented actress. I wish him every success.”
return of emerdale
Shortly after leaving Emmerdale as an actor, Reece confirmed that he would return behind the camera acting as director of the telenovela.
His on-screen other half, Lisa Riley, who plays Mandy Dingle, welcomed him to his new adventure, sharing a snap of Reece with the caption: “Good luck daddy Dins Reece Dinsdale as you start your block running Emmerdale tomorrow. .
“Everyone is behind you and very happy for you. I was just wondering ‘are you going to bring your coat’?”
He added: “Still two meters away, I send you a big hug of my love and luck.”
According to his iMDB page, Reece has directed a total of 15 episodes of Emmerdale in 2020 and 2021, as well as multiple episodes of shows like Pitching In and Moving On.
body transformation
In May of last year, Reece unveiled his amazing body transformation after leaving the fries.
The star posted a side-by-side before-and-after photo, and the subsequent results show him with a noticeably slimmer face and a newly-grown beard after cutting back on the salty snack.
He announced on Twitter: “It’s amazing what 10 weeks of rest and recovery (and a lot less fries) can do for you.
“Start shooting Monday and I’m ready for the fray! #Emmerdale.”
Fans immediately jumped into the comments section to praise the star, with a gushing, “Looking good! No stress, relaxation and lots of fresh air works wonders!”
“Wow, you look fantastic! Zara is a lucky lady. Good luck with the address!” another repeated.
bug on air
Reece found himself scolded during an appearance on This Morning, in which he accidentally spilled some dead secrets about his upcoming outing.
He had admitted that four people were at risk of dying from the truck accident, which did not sit well with soap opera expert Sharon Marshall, as the public was only supposed to know about three.
She playfully scolded him, “Right, so Reece was in Emmerdale yesterday and spilled some secrets.
You weren’t supposed to know there were four people! Reece!”
Holly Willoughby chimed in: “Oh oops!”
Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday from 7pm on ITV.
