Dustin has made headlines for his changing frame, having lost 10kg since recovering from surgery for a lacerated kidney in July.

The Brownlow medalist was placed on a strict fruit-only diet to help him recover after surgery. Fruit-only diets are regularly used to treat kidney trauma.

Richmond physical performance manager Peter Burge admitted in August that Dustin had “lost a little bit of weight” due to the unusual nutrition program.

‘He’s had to manage his diet [for his] health a little in the last two weeks and it will also do so in the next three or four weeks,’ he said.

“He’s working with specialists and once he’s gotten the go-ahead from the specialists, he’ll be able to resume some form of light training in the off-season.”

Dustin spent nine days in hospital after suffering a lacerated kidney in a brutal on-field collision with Brisbane player Mitch Robinson on July 16.

He missed the last month of the AFL season due to injury.

Dustin’s coach, Damien Hardwick, praised his great player’s toughness at the time.

“He’s a very strong boy, Dustin,” Damien said.

“The only thing I will say about Dustin is that mentally he handles these things very well … he is in a good mood.”

Richmond’s premiership hopes were dashed as a result of Dustin’s injury, but three-time gold medalist Norm Smith has now been cleared to return to the field.
