Hay fever is defined as an overreaction of the immune system to pollen in the air. According to WebMD, trees, grass, and weeds fill with pollen in late spring, however, the latter triggers allergies.

Hay fever gets its name from the hay cutting season. Historically, this activity occurred in the summer months, around the same time that many people were experiencing symptoms.
