Michael Mosley: ‘Easy’ exercise equivalent to running 10 marathons – ‘best thing’ to do

On his podcast, Just One Thing, Dr. Michael began, “I’ve been sitting at my desk for about an hour and I’m about to do something that could really have a long-term impact on my health: [standing up].”

The simple act of changing from a sitting position to a standing position works to lower blood sugar levels, speed up metabolism and burn a “surprising” number of calories.

Instead of doing your “beloved squats” or walking your dog, Dr. Michael suggested that weight loss starts with standing on two feet.

Standing is an incredibly easy and accessible route to weight loss, but it’s something that many desk workers find it difficult to schedule.

Dr. Michael spoke with Jake, the community manager, who sits “99 percent of the time.”

And you’re not alone, as most people spend 70 to 80 percent of their waking hours sedentary.

Professor of Applied Exercise Science John Uttley revealed that modern men and women sit about twice as long as they did in the 1950s.

Dr. Michael stated, “Long-term, uninterrupted sitting is incredibly bad for us.” But why?

DO NOT MISS IT

The constant gravitational pull of sitting is bad for bone density and has a huge impact on the body.

Spending as many hours sitting as people can actually reduce the benefits of exercise when they stand up.

Dangerously, it can even lead to an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even death, according to Dr. Michael.

Do you always eat while sitting on the bed? Improve this habit of yours, otherwise this rare disease will surround you

But how can people get up more, especially in a desk job?

Standing up as little as once an hour for two or three minutes can do wonders for a person’s brain, mood, and waistline.

After a week of doing this, the typically sedentary Jake felt more productive at work, had more energy, and had made it a habit to stand up without even realizing it.

Slimmers can incorporate standing into their work life by taking phone and video calls standing up or investing in standing desks.

The simple act of standing can help remove sugar from the blood.

Dr. Michael commented on a study in which office workers stood for an additional three hours a day for a week.

This “simple” and “easy” exercise raised their heart rate so much that, over the course of a year, they would burn the same number of calories as running an incredible 10 marathons, without even moving their feet.

Anyone who wants to lose weight without completely altering their lifestyle, this is the perfect method.

Dr. Michael stated, “It’s one of the best things you can do for your health.”
