Hong KongInitially, a drug discovered and designed using artificial intelligence (AI) for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic disease that causes scarring of the lungs, has entered human clinical trials.

Hong Kong-based biotech company Insilic medicine, in a statement, announced that the Phase II oral dosing trial of INS018_055 is currently running for more than 12 weeks in China, and will then be expanded to test 60 people in the US and China. Zhavoronkov said he hopes to have the results of the current Phase II trial next year. IPF affects the tissue that surrounds the air sacs, or alveoli, in the lungs. It develops when that lung tissue becomes thick and stiff for unknown reasons. Over time, these changes can cause permanent scarring in the lungs, called fibrosis, which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe.
