New Delhi, February 11 (PTI) The Delhi government’s mobile mental health units in 11 districts have handled 39 cases in the past two months, officials said on Friday.

The Institute of Human Behavior and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) is involved in the operation of these mobile units which began in September last year. These facilities are available in fully equipped ambulances.

The mobile units are involved in the rescue and treatment of homeless and homebound people with mental illness, provide aftercare for people with mental illness, epilepsy and stroke with behavioral problems, and provide counseling to people with mental illness in shelters.

“It is an innovative and specialized service to bridge the gap in mental health services and ensure due legal and ethical correctness. The services are limited to the geographical area of Delhi,” an official said.

Dr. Saswati Chakraborti, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of MMHU, IHBAS, said that those who require his assistance, be it a local or law enforcement agency, should mail them the details and his team assesses the patient.

Officials said the number of cases handled by mobile units would have been higher had the pandemic not hit the national capital. PTI SLB MTF MTF
