What exactly is ADHD, the mental condition suffered by the director of Barbie, Geta Gerwig?

The world is turning pink with Barbie-core fever all over the world. It’s a Barbie world right now and we’re living in it. Speaking of the global coverage of Barbie, the film’s director Great Gergwig recently opened up about Barbie’s mental health condition. She was open about how she was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is a common mental health problem that many people deal with, but one that often goes unnoticed. One of the reasons is that there is still a lack of awareness about the importance of mental health. While the need to be kind to be ours is growing, there is much to be done. Just like we recognize the symptoms or signs of various other physical health problems, emotional and psychological ones go unnoticed.

In an interview with The Guardian, Gerwig said she was a very energetic child, with impulsive behavior and also had little trouble concentrating.

“(At school I) had a lot of energy. Now as an adult I have ADHD, I was diagnosed with it. But when she was a child, my mother would say: ‘We are going to enroll her in every activity. Let’s tire her out. I’ve always had an enormous amount of enthusiasm.” “I was interested in, like, everything. She had a very active imagination. She had many very deep feelings. He was excited”.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs primarily in children and can last into adulthood. This condition challenges concentration to hyperactivity in a person which further affects their day-to-day life.

  Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

According to the Center for Disease Control, people with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (they may act without thinking about the outcome), or being overly active. Although ADHD cannot be cured, it can be successfully managed and some symptoms may improve as the child gets older.

ADHD SYMPTOMS

  • problems with concentration
  • Increasingly forgetful of the little things
  • easily distracted
  • Difficulty staying still
  • people interrupting
  • Difficulty resisting things
  • Tends to become very restless

ADHD TREATMENT

According to experts, a combination treatment can help control ADHD and this requires seeking help from mental health professionals. Counseling, medication if necessary and as prescribed by the psychiatrist, behavioral interventions, etc. A multimodal approach may be most beneficial to managing ADHD that includes counseling sessions, therapy, and a supportive environment of friends and family.

With more people coming out and talking about their personal experiences with mental health testing, it only validates and encourages others to accept it.

This is just generic information about the mental health condition. It is only advisable to always obtain a professional opinion and advice. ADHD can be different for different people. Mental health itself needs to have more candid conversations to build a supportive environment and understanding of the importance of mental health. While things seem to be looking up, it’s still a long way to go.
