bodybuilder and youtuber matt morsia, better known to his followers as MattDoesFitness, has been exercising a lot less lately, following a ruptured Achilles tendon that has left him unable to squat or deadlift while he recovers. In a new video on his channel, Matt provides an update on his recovery, visits his physical therapist, and finds out how much strength he’s lost in the last 100 days.
“At this point, the benefit doesn’t outweigh the risk,” her physio tells her about returning to her usual level of training. “A stronger, slower contraction is relatively safe. If something happens and you’re holding a heavy bar, you have to step forward or lose your balance…that’s the risk.”
Ultimately, Matt is informed that he still doesn’t have enough range of motion to do the type of squats he wants, and a variation of the Smith machine is recommended. But it is able to start deadlifting a reasonable amount of weight again.
“He feels angry, to be honest,” he says once he’s back in the gym. “I don’t want to curse him out and I want to be patient, but at the same time I literally can’t feel it at all.” He explains that he’s taking an even wider stance than usual for his deadlifts to ensure his knee shifts less, minimizing dorsiflexion and reducing stress on the Achilles tendon.
You finish your deadlift session with 3 sets of 220lbs (10-100kg), which would normally count as your warm-up. “You’re talking about 30 percent of my one-rep max, very, very, very light,” he says.
“The weight felt absolutely fine,” he adds. “The pain isn’t as bad as I thought, my back is feeling it a bit because I haven’t deadlifted in almost three months. I’m playing mega safe.
