In a recent video on his YouTube channel, the personal trainer Don Saladin (who has worked with stars like Sebastian Stan and Hugh Jackman) tackles one of the most common questions he gets from people who aren’t seeing the results they hoped for on their weight loss and fitness journeys. What do most of them have in common? They skip leg day.

Saladino explains that neglecting leg workouts, or not approaching them with the same intensity and consistency as other workouts, is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

“Training legs is not the same as running and cardio or cycling,” he says. “You need to train your legs separately, with resistance…Resistance training will increase your basal metabolic rate, which means you’re going to burn more calories from fat through resistance training than through cardio.”

“When you train your legs, you get this fat-burning effect that is very difficult to achieve with any type of cardio you’re doing,” he continues, “because leg training becomes so intense that it requires your whole body to have to participate. for you to produce a level of tension, and you’re getting the best abdominal work you’ve ever done when training your lower body.”

Saladino suggests training your legs at least once a week and finding whatever combination and variation of leg exercises, like squats, split squats, deadlifts, and lunges, works for you personally. He adds that you don’t have to be training so hard that you can’t walk the next day.

“Start slow,” he says. “Start focusing on strengthening your legs, focus on your lower body mobility, and watch what starts to happen with your workouts. You may just get leaner. Your abs could improve a lot. is it so It’s going to get a lot stronger.”
