Abhishek Bachchan Dismisses Claims Breathe: Into The Shadows Stigmatises Mental Health

Abhishek Bachchan, Amit Sadh and Nithya Menen starring in Breathe: Into The Shadows Season 2 has premiered on Amazon Prime. The first season of the web series got a lot of appreciation from the audience and critics. Abhishek’s character in the crime thriller is that of Dr. Avinash Sabharwal, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. But a part of society has opposed it, claiming that the second season of the show is stigmatizing mental health.

In response to the same, the actor spoke to The Indian Express and refuted the claims, saying, “I completely disagree. The people who have said that have no idea what they are talking about.” Abhishek shared that there were four or five doctors who worked on the script. He also mentioned that director Mayank Sharma’s brother-in-law is a psychiatrist, who works particularly on this disorder. “That is of the utmost importance to us, to be sensitive to mental health, especially people with similar disorders,” added the Dasvi actor.

He also stated that they consulted his brother-in-law daily from the sets. She also shared that one of his best friends is a psychiatrist, who she used to work with to understand the sensitivities of how a doctor would approach their patients.

“So I think they are dead wrong and these are sensationalists who just want to say something because they have a platform to say it. I’m sorry to be so aggressive, but anyone who says (we) stigmatize mental health has no idea what they’re talking about because that was the first thing we looked at,” she continued.

Abhishek also shared that he feels it has become convenient to trap filmmakers and storytellers on an issue, calling it “grossly unfair.” He also mentioned that people have to understand what the intention of the program is. “If we have to be picky, I can find a problem with anything,” he added.

He also mentioned that they can have speeches and there is freedom of expression, but wrongly pointing the finger is unfair, especially when one has been paying attention to the subject for a good two years.

The series is backed by Vikram Malhotra and Abundantia Entertainment. It is written by Mayank, Vikram Tuli, Arshad Syed, Priya Saggi, and Abhijeet Deshpande.
