Making data more accessible and incorporating technology for efficient care delivery can help India’s digital transformation Health care industry, said the former US Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr David Shulkin.
Shulkin, who is on a week-long visit to the country, said cooperation between New Delhi and Washington is “absolutely critical” given the technological resources India brings to the table.
In an interview with PTI, Shulkin said that the Indian government, like the United States, has now formulated policies that will be extremely helpful in driving the digital transformation of the industry.
Both India and the US can unleash the power of data that can provide citizens with access to treatment, he said. “This is what I found at the Department of Veteran Affairs… We had all this data but it wasn’t always accessible.”
“Once we start allowing that data to be used, it will help accelerate research and the discovery of new therapies and diagnoses. It could help millions of people around the world,” said Shulkin, who is currently an advisor to Indigene. A provider of technology-led healthcare solutions.
“We are all starting to transform our healthcare systems to be more digital and incorporate technology so that we can deliver care more efficiently and find new and better ways to treat patients. And that will mean making our data More accessible,” he said.
He stressed the need to invest more in digital solutions and said governments need to work with the private sector in this area. “I don’t think any government can do this alone. There has to be a public-private partnership.”
Some of the initiatives that India and the United States are making in the artificial intelligence sector are important and will make a lot of sense in healthcare and life sciences as well, Shulkin said.
“So, I think data sharing and data collaboration is definitely one thing that we’re starting to see a lot of Indian technology resources shift towards in healthcare. We’re going to see big advances in things like artificial intelligence and predictive analytics,” he said. .
Shulkin was the ninth Secretary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs in the Trump Administration and Under Secretary of Health for Veterans Affairs in the Barack Obama Administration.
