AI tech to detect breast cancer at 351 health centres – ET HealthWorld

Bhopal: Breast cancer survival rates in India remain low and rarely diagnosis and treatment can improve the survival rates. MP health department is looking into computer analysed thermal images to generate an automated interpretation report indicating breast health.

A proposal for the project aims to cover 351 community health centres across Madhya Pradesh. Upon medical advice, women would be screened for breast cancer.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled thermal imaging device and applicable tools will be required to capture nodule of at least 5mm. The health department is aiming for a demonstrated proof of 90 per cent sensitivity and 80 per cent specificity. In keeping with sensitive nature of the test, technology or devices need to be radiation-free and non-invasive, according to sources.

A health department estimate is that in Madhya Pradesh, the average annual number of incidence and rates per 1,00,000 of all ages of women is 897 as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) — National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research — Profile of Cancer and related factors, Madhya Pradesh 2021.

Breast cancer is the malignant tumor with the potential to invade other tissues or spread to other parts of the body. It starts in the cells of the breast. It occurs both in men and women. However male breast cancer is rare. However, among Indian women, breast cancer is the commonest cancer overall. These malignancies account for more than 55 per cent of the total cancer burden.

AI-based thermal screening for breast cancer will be implemented in all 351 CHCs in the state and also at the point of care where the beneficiaries have poor awareness related to breast cancer as the AI tools are portable and sturdy hence can be transported easily. The devices are accurate, affordable, accessible and age-agnostic.
