YouTuber Laurie Shaw is known for taking on a wide range of 30-day fitness challenges, from intensive Krav Maga Y muay thai training, until trying master some of the most challenging calisthenics moves. In his most recent video, Shaw documents his efforts to improve his 50-meter swim time over a one-month period.
“I suck at swimming,” he admits on Day 1, at which point he has a time of 32.42 seconds. “For the next 30 days I’m going to be training almost every day…I’m sure I’m probably going to have to go back to basics, slow down a lot, work on my technique. Who knows, maybe I can even hit below the 30 second mark.
Shaw enlists the help of a swim coach who can provide valuable information on hand, arm, wrist and head position that will reduce drag in the water and can shave a fraction of a second off.
“It will be interesting to see how much faster I can get there, because I feel like I have to slow everything down to work on my technique,” he says. “I find that my mind wanders while I’m swimming, concentrating on one thing like raising my arms, and then forgetting to make sure my head is in the right position. So I think that’s going to be a challenge for me on the day.” 30; keeping it all together.”
On the final day of the challenge, Shaw takes to the water one last time to attempt a new personal best time in the 50m and manages to hit his “ambitious” sub-30-second target, completing the swim in 29.82.
“It feels good to know that those 30 days of hard work paid off,” he says. “That was my goal, to get to under 30 seconds, and sometimes it seemed pretty unattainable… It feels amazing.”
