“In a normal patient, there is one kidney on the left side and one on the right side and two ureters connecting these kidneys to the bladder. But in this case, we were surprised to see that the left kidney lay alone without any connection to the bladder. . “, said Dr. Vipin Tyagi, senior consultant, who operated on the patient.
“Since the patient was young and the intestine is not the ideal substitute for ureter reconstruction, we decided to perform an ‘Auto-Kidney Transplant’, which means in this patient removing the normal kidney from the left side and bringing it closer to the bladder of the right side and connecting it with blood vessels that run from the abdomen to the right leg (External Iliac Vessels). Now both kidneys are on the right side,” he added.

Dr Tyagi further added: “The kidney was close to the bladder but with a 4-5 cm gap. So, we decided to reconstruct a 4-5 cm tube using the wall of the urinary bladder. As soon as this reconstructed tube was connected to the bladder, the blood flow to this kidney was restarted and immediately urine began to come out through this tube.”
“The options before us were to remove the kidney or redo the missing kidney-bladder connection using intestine or perform an autologous kidney transplant,” said Dr. Sudhir Chadha, co-chair of the Department of Urology.
Meanwhile, the patient had made a good recovery and was recently discharged with both kidneys functioning on one side of the body (right side).
