Bland was stabbed six times while in a Richmond parking lot. As he lay dying, he called 911 on his cell phone and told the operator that Dalen had attacked him.

During the trial, the court was told that Dalen was angry with the social worker after he told police that Dalen wanted to kill the woman who had fired him from his job at a gas station in 1999.
