Be careful if you use cinnamon when preparing vegetables.

Lead in cinnamon: Spices have a particular importance in our cuisine. Many spices are extremely beneficial to your health. One of them is cinnamon, which makes up the inner part of the tree’s bark. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years for fevers, swelling, colds and vomiting.

However, a shocking revelation has been made regarding cinnamon. Recently, in an analysis by Consumer Reports, a US non-profit organization, at least 12 cinnamon products contain high amounts of lead, which is extremely harmful to health.

Lead in cinnamon products

Consumer Reports examined about 36 cinnamon products in which garam masala and spice powder were added. All of these brands were among the brands available in grocery stores and stores in America. The amount of lead in 12 products like Paras, EGN and Rani brands was found to be above the New York limit of 1 part per million (PPM). Let us tell you that New York is the only state in the United States that controls heavy metals in spices. What’s concerning is that only a quarter of a teaspoon of these cinnamon products contains high levels of lead per day.

Why is lead in cinnamon dangerous?

James Rogers, director of food safety research at Consumer Reports, said even small amounts of lead can be dangerous to your health. It builds up in the body and is never eliminated, which can cause serious damage. Children and pregnant women are most exposed to lead. It is no less dangerous for young people too. Because of lead, children’s brains do not develop and they face learning problems. Prolonged exposure to lead in young people can cause liver damage, high blood pressure and even impotence.

How to eliminate lead?

Lead is an element naturally present in the soil. Plants can absorb it as they grow. Since cinnamon is made from the bark of trees and these trees take at least 10 years to grow, they have plenty of time to absorb lead from the soil. Additionally, each time cinnamon is dried, lead can be removed from it. People should also avoid using cinnamon that contains lead. If there is a possibility of this happening in a product, have that tested as well.
