Better late than never. Twenty minutes of exercise a day after age 70 can help prevent heart disease, research has found.
One study said that people in their seventies who exercised 20 minutes a day had significantly lower rates of heart disease than those who were inactive. The benefits were most evident among those in their seventies.
Italian researchers tracked more than 3,000 adults in the country over the age of 65 for more than 20 years. Physical activity was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, stroke, and coronary heart disease. The authors found that at least 20 minutes of exercise every day among people aged 70 to 75 seemed to have the greatest effect.
